I was privileged to get my picture taken with JI Packer at the AMiA Winter Conference a couple of months ago. He even printed his name in my ESV Bible (he wouldn’t sign it as if he had written it!). The good Rev. Dr. Packer has a new book out that he wrote with another professor, Dr. Gary Parrett of Gordon-Conwell Seminary. The book is called “Grounded in the Gospel: Building Believers the Old-Fashioned Way.” In addition to the book, which I have yet to read, Packer and Parrett did an interview with Dr. Michael Horton about the book and the need for catechism in the church.
Take 30 minutes of your time and listen to the interview. It is very good and insightful about the state of what we might call discipleship in the church today. Packer and Parrett are looking to the ancient practice of discipleship called “catechism.” There is great need for new Christians to get “grounded in the Gospel!” The introduction to the interview states:
Throughout the history of the church, young believers and new converts to the faith went through a process called “catechism.” What are the roots of this ancient practice, and why has it fallen out of use in contemporary Christianity?
Listen to the Grounded in the Gospel Interview.

I feel that when I was a young Christian that I was put through an incomplete process. God help us in this day of “Christianity-lite”.

Good words from a godly man.
I think Packer is calling out what sociologist Christian Smith calls the religion of America that has infiltrated the church: moralistic, therapeutic, deism.
Thanks for sharing the Packer Interview.
