The reality of present suffering for bearing the name of Christ is a given. The problem is that we often lose heart and question where God is in the midst of suffering. And the devil, whom Peter compares to a “roaring lion,” is enticing us with the lies that God does not care or love us, or is absent when we suffer. When we believe these lies, stop trusting God and depart from suffering for doing good, he “devours” us. We need be humble, receive grace from God to stand firm in faith. We also draw encouragement knowing that our brothers and sisters around the world are also suffering for Christ. And we need weigh the present, temporary sufferings with the eternal glory that awaits us in Christ.
