Almighty God, look mercifully upon your people so that by your great goodness we may be always governed and preserved both in body and soul, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect for Ash Wednesday (prayed daily through Lent)
Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: make in us new and contrite hearts so that, lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, we may receive from you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Q13. Can we make this payment ourselves?
A. Certainly not. Actually, we increase our debt every day.
Q14 . Can another creature—any at all— pay this debt for us?
A. No. To begin with, God will not punish any other creature for what a human is guilty of. Furthermore, no mere creature can bear the weight of God’s eternal wrath against sin and deliver others from it.
