Psalm 18 is David’s reflection on his life and God’s faithfulness and goodness to him personally. David opens the prayer with the declaration, “I love you O Yahweh, my strength!” This word for love is one that emphasizes the heartfelt emotion from his inner being. As the Psalm unfolds, with powerful imagery of God’s actions to rescue David and set him as King, with all nations bowing before him, we see how David is prophesying about his future Son: Jesus. And it is Jesus who prays these words most perfectly. Jesus is the one whose love for God and whose righteous life permits Him to pray Psalm 18 perfectly for Himself, and now for us, who by faith, are in Him. In Christ, David’s words become our words of love and thankfulness to God for rescuing us.
