Before the sermon on Sunday we sang a version of Psalm 73 by Shane and Shane which opens with these lines:
“Why do the wicked men prosper?
Why do I envy the proud”
and a few lines later,
“Lord, would you keep me from stumbling?
Guard me from all of my doubt”

That is the premise of Psalm 73 where Asaph deals with one of the most common of temptations and sins that we struggle with: looking at other people’s lives and wanting what they have. This can be wealth and what it brings, or success in a career or number of different areas. And if we let that envy sink into our hearts, it turns to resentment against God as we come to believe He has not rewarded us for living for Him, especially if those who seem to have it all are living unrighteousness lives.

What do we do? We humble ourselves and sit with God’s people in corporate worship to receive truth from God’s Word, resetting our perspective to align with God’s. We learn to be satisfied with only Him.
As the song later says,
“As for me, Your presence is my good
You are my treasure my portion forever.”

This is the answer that Asaph gives us in Psalm 73.
