As we celebrate the Christmas season, it is important to remember why it is that the Son took on flesh and was born as Jesus. This is what we see in the final verses of Matthew 1. As Joseph is approached by the angel, he is informed that the baby with whom Mary is pregnant was conceived by the Holy Spirit and will be born so that men may be saved from their sins. Thus, Joseph was to name him Jesus, Yahweh saves. And this is what Jesus did, as he lived the perfect life and gave himself up on the cross that we may be justified through faith in him.
