Psalm 42 & 43 are Psalms of individual lament for suffering. Psalm 44 is a communal lament for when we as the Church, the people of God suffer. And specifically suffer for being persecuted for Jesus’ sake. This is the promise of the whole New Testament: that to follow Jesus is to follow his footsteps into suffering and Jesus tells us to rejoice when we do. But when we suffer, even for Jesus, we might find ourselves experiencing feeling of abandonment by God rather than rejoicing. How do we pray then? God, in His mercy, has given us Psalm 44 which teaches us to be honest with God in our prayer, even to the point of telling God we suffer because of Him, but how to do this in faith. It is one of the most important lessons we need to learn to grow in our faith.
