Verses 18-22 of 1 Peter chapter 3 have a couple of difficult and challenging statements to understand. Verse 19 talks about Jesus preaching to the spirits in prison and verse 21 talk about baptism now saves you. Both of these are statements meant to explain or support Peter’s main point. And the main point is that when we suffer for doing good as we are called to do, and we start to lose heart or become tempted to not follow Jesus because of this suffering, we need to remember one thing. Jesus ALSO suffered, unto death. BUT, suffering and death were not the end of His story. He rose again, conquering death, and ascended into heaven where He now reigns over everything in heaven, on earth and under earth, including spirits now in prison from the days of Noah. So, we should take heart knowing that our suffering, even unto death if the Lord wills, is not the end of our story. Life forever with Jesus is!
